David Bui is a prize-winning conductor and current RBC Assistant Conductor of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, serving under Chief Conductor Otto Tausk since 2022. A First Prize winner of the Ionel Perlea International Conducting Competition (2021), he has led performances across the VSO’s Main Series, Kids and Community Concerts, outdoor events like Symphony in the Park, and the VSO Gala, demonstrating versatility across classical and contemporary repertoire. Passionate about music education, he teaches conducting at the VSO School of Music and the Vancouver Island Music Academy (VIMA), and in 2024 led the BCMEA Honorary String Ensemble, celebrating top student musicians in British Columbia.
David holds degrees from the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin and completed postgraduate studies with distinction under Prof. Ulrich Windfuhr at the Hamburg University of Music. He has participated in elite festivals worldwide, including the Pärnu Festival, PRISMA Festival, Fiskars Festival, and the Mendelssohn Festival. In 2019, he was personally selected by Riccardo Muti for the Italian Opera Academy in Ravenna. A 2024 participant in Orchestre Métropolitain’s Conducting Academy under Yannick Nézet-Séguin, he has already conducted orchestras such as the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Hamburger Symphoniker, Heidelberger Philharmoniker, and Moldova Philharmonic Iași, with upcoming debuts with the Kamloops Symphony and Manitoba Chamber Orchestra in 2025.
