Hermann Bäumer has been the Chief Conductor of the Mainz State Philharmonic Orchestra and the General Music Director of the State Theatre in Mainz since the 2011/2012 season.

His programs have earned him widespread acclaim from both audiences and critics. As a former member of the Berlin Philharmonic, he understands the nuances of excellent orchestral work and is highly regarded by orchestras worldwide for his modest, music-focused approach.

Bäumer has conducted the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, Bamberger Symphoniker, Bayerisches Staatsorchester München, Rundfunksinfonieorchester Berlin, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, hr-Sinfonieorchester, WDR Rundfunkorchester, Ensemble Resonanz Hamburg, Radiosinfonieorchester Oslo, Norwegian National Opera, Helsinki Radio Orchestra, Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonieorchester St. Gallen, and the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 2005-2006, Hermann Bäumer conducted the world premiere of Alex Nowitz’s Bestmannoper (as GMD at the Theater Osnabrück), receiving great attention from both press and audiences. In the 2007/08 season, he presented Gounod’s La Nonne Sanglante, which also attracted significant attention.
In 2009, recordings of d’Albert’s Seejungfräulein and Symphony Op. 4 were released, followed by Gounod’s La Nonne Sanglante in 2010, which won the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik 3/2010 (cpo).

In 2013, Henze’s Prinz von Homburg was widely acclaimed in Mainz. Bäumer recorded Enna’s Heiße Liebe with the NDR Radiophilharmonie (2006) and Leifs’ Edda I with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra (BIS). Other notable recordings include Henze’s Wundertheater with the Osnabrücker Symphoniker, Höller’s Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2 with the Bamberger Symphoniker, and the complete symphonies of Foerster with the Osnabrücker Symphoniker (ECHO Klassik 2009). In 2015-2016, he guest-conducted orchestras including the Staatskapelle Halle, Sinfonieorchester St. Gallen, and Qingdao & Guiyang Symphony Orchestras in China.

Recordings include works by Westerhoff (Osnabrück Symphony) and Gernsheim (Mainz State Orchestra), along with a highly praised recording of Max Bruch’s Violin Concertos with Antje Weithaas and the NDR Radiophilharmonie (cpo).
Bäumer is also renowned for his collaborations with youth orchestras, including the Bundesjugendorchester, Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, and LJO Rheinland-Pfalz.

In 2023, Bäumer was a member of the jury of the I international ferenc fricsay conducting competition.
