Vivian (Wing Wun) Ip is one of Hong Kong’s leading young conductors, acclaimed for her expressive musicianship and dynamic stage presence. Praised by Grammy Award-winning conductor John Nelson as having conducting “like breathing,” she was appointed Associate Conductor of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta in 2023. She previously served as Assistant Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic (2016–2018), where she worked closely with Music Director Jaap van Zweden, Principal Guest Conductor Yu Long, and international maestros including Christoph Eschenbach, Charles Dutoit, and Vassily Sinaisky. An accomplished guest conductor, she has appeared at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Musica Viva Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Grand Opera.
Ip holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music with First Class Honours from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Indiana University Bloomington, and a Magistra Artium in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where she graduated with the year’s highest award under Uroš Lajovic and Johannes Wildner. As an opera conductor, she has led productions including Carmen, Die Zauberflöte, Der Fliegende Holländer, and Maria de Buenos Aires. She was Music Director of Chorus Delicti Wien for seven years and has collaborated with ensembles such as the Berlin Radio Choir and Arnold Schoenberg Chor. In 2023, she co-founded the ANIMA Ensemble, dedicated to contemporary chamber opera, and presented the acclaimed Hong Kong premiere of Philip Glass and Leonard Cohen’s The Book of Longing.
